For many organizations, the search for cloud, artificial intelligence, and data analytics talent begins too late.
Recruiters often focus on college seniors, recent graduates, and experienced professionals. By that point, the strongest candidates are already comparing offers, building relationships with employers, and choosing which industries they want to enter. Companies that wait until graduation to introduce themselves are competing for talent at the most crowded stage of the funnel.
A more durable approach starts earlier: during high school.
Engaging students in grades 9 through 12 does not mean asking teenagers to perform professional work or replacing formal education. It means helping students understand modern technology careers, giving them practical exposure, and building relationships with schools, teachers, families, and community organizations.
For business leaders and HR professionals, early outreach is becoming an important workforce strategy. It can expand the future talent pool, improve access to technical careers, and reduce dependence on a limited supply of experienced candidates.
The technology talent shortage is already affecting business
Cloud computing refers to the use of remote computing infrastructure to store data, run applications, and support digital services. Artificial intelligence enables systems to recognize patterns, generate content, or assist with decisions. Data analytics turns information into insights that organizations can use to improve operations.
These capabilities now support nearly every major industry. They influence healthcare, finance, government, transportation, manufacturing, entertainment, and professional services. As adoption grows, demand for people who can build, manage, and evaluate these systems will continue to increase.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that employment in computer occupations will grow by approximately 11.7% from 2023 to 2033: faster than the average for all occupations. Software developer employment is projected to grow by 17.9%, while data scientist employment is projected to grow by 36%.
These projections do not describe a temporary hiring trend. They point to a long-term shift in the skills organizations will need.
At the same time, companies are reporting difficulty finding people with current technical capabilities. A 2024 cloud skills report from SoftwareOne reported that many organizations face gaps in cloud and artificial intelligence skills, with shortages affecting workloads, productivity, and employee retention.
The implication is straightforward: companies that wait for the market to produce enough qualified candidates will remain exposed to hiring delays, higher recruitment costs, and increased competition.
Why high school is an important starting point
High school is one of the earliest practical points at which organizations can influence awareness of technical careers. Students are beginning to select courses, consider postsecondary education, and form opinions about the industries where they may eventually work.
However, access to computer science education remains uneven.
The Computer Science Teachers Association’s 2024 report found that 82% of U.S. high school students have computer science classes available at their schools. Yet only approximately 6.4% of high school students take computer science classes each year. The report notes that participation would need to grow to 25% for all students to have an opportunity to learn computer science before graduation.
The report also identifies continuing participation gaps. Young women represent approximately 33% of high school computer science students. Latine students, economically disadvantaged students, multilingual learners, and students with disabilities also remain underrepresented relative to their share of the broader student population.

Three practical ways to begin
A company does not need to establish a large foundation or sign a complex multi-year agreement before taking its first step. A focused pilot can begin within one quarter.
1. Offer classroom mentorship and career presentations
Start by contacting local high schools, career and technical education coordinators, STEM teachers, or district workforce leaders.
A 30- to 45-minute presentation can introduce students to:
- How cloud computing supports everyday applications
- How businesses use data to make decisions
- What artificial intelligence can and cannot do
- The roles of data analysts, software developers, cloud administrators, and cybersecurity professionals
- Education and training options, including certifications, apprenticeships, associate degrees, and four-year programs
The most effective presentations avoid excessive technical language. Students do not need a detailed architecture diagram. They need to understand what professionals do, how they began, and which skills they can start developing now.
Virtual sessions can reduce scheduling and travel barriers. In-person visits can create stronger relationships with teachers and students. A combination of both formats gives schools more flexibility.
2. Sponsor a small, project-based data challenge
Students learn more effectively when they can apply an idea to a real question.
A company might partner with a teacher to create a short project focused on a local issue, such as traffic patterns, energy use, public transportation, recycling, school activities, or community business trends. Students can work with a small, anonymized dataset and use accessible tools to clean information, identify patterns, and create a simple visualization.
The objective is not to produce a business-ready system. It is to help students practice problem-solving, teamwork, communication, and evidence-based thinking.
Companies can support these projects by providing:
- A clearly defined question
- A sample dataset with no confidential information
- A project guide with basic milestones
- Volunteer mentors for scheduled office hours
- Feedback from employees at the end of the project
Awards do not need to be expensive. Certificates, professional feedback, office visits, or opportunities to present to company leaders can provide meaningful recognition.

3. Build job-shadowing and micro-internship pathways
Traditional internships may be difficult for organizations to manage, particularly when legal, insurance, supervision, and scheduling requirements are considered. Smaller experiences can provide value while remaining manageable.
A half-day job-shadowing program might allow four to eight students to observe a project meeting, learn how an analyst prepares a report, or see how a technical team documents a process.
A micro-internship can be structured around a limited number of hours and a defined learning outcome. Appropriate activities might include:
- Documenting a basic workflow
- Reviewing a nonconfidential dataset
- Creating a simple dashboard
- Testing a training exercise
- Organizing information for an internal knowledge resource
All student programs should use clear supervision, age-appropriate responsibilities, privacy protections, and applicable school and employment requirements. The goal is education and exposure: not unpaid production work.

Make the funnel measurable
Early talent programs are long-term investments, so organizations should measure more than immediate hires.
Useful indicators include:
- Number of schools and students reached
- Participation by grade level
- Attendance at presentations and workshops
- Student completion rates for projects
- Participation among historically underrepresented groups
- Teacher satisfaction and likelihood of continuing
- Number of students returning for a second activity
- Applications for internships, apprenticeships, or training programs
- Conversion from high school engagement to college internship
- Conversion from college internship to full-time employment
These measures help HR teams determine which activities are creating sustained interest. They also give executives a way to evaluate the program as a workforce investment rather than a one-time community event.
The most important principle is consistency. One annual career day may improve awareness, but a multi-year relationship can build trust and continuity. Students should be able to see how an introductory classroom activity connects to a later project, internship, credential, or entry-level opportunity.
Begin with one school and one clear objective
The strongest early talent programs are usually specific before they become large.
An organization can begin by selecting one local school, identifying one internal program owner, and setting one measurable objective: for example, delivering four career sessions, supporting one data challenge, or creating eight job-shadowing placements during the academic year.
From there, the company can learn what schools need, what students value, and which employees are effective mentors. The program can then expand based on evidence rather than assumptions.
